Burdened by the academic and moral decline in the public school system and convinced of the Biblical mandate to “by teaching . . . present every man perfect in Christ Jesus,” the members of Northside Baptist Church founded Northside Christian School in the fall of 1975. Since then the school has reached an enrollment of over 400 students, from three-year-olds through high school seniors. Located in historic Charleston, South Carolina, NCS is situated on thirty-plus acres near the Ashley Phosphate Road exit from I-26. Buildings include a sanctuary, office wing, two-story kindergarten/elementary building with music theory room and computer lab, junior high/high school building with library and computer lab, a multi-purpose building with Junior High and Teen rooms, and an activity center with air-conditioned gymnasium, locker rooms, science lab, kitchen, band/choir room, piano studios, and music room.
Knowing something of Northside Baptist Church is essential to an understanding of Northside Christian School. The church is an independent, fundamental Baptist church which focuses on evangelizing the sinner and edifying the saint. Under the ministry of Dr. John E. Stevens, from 1988-2000, and under the leadership of Pastor Mike Felber, the church has developed rapidly in both size and outreach. The church oversees a growing Sunday School with some eleven adult classes, a richly varied music ministry, a thriving AWANA outreach, Ladies’ Fellowship and Men for Missions, jail ministries, a year-round youth ministry, a Singles ministry, and a highly respected Christian day school, whose administrator is a member of the church administrative staff. The Deacons of the church constitute the School Board and take an active interest in its operation. The church demonstrates its support of its school ministry by directing part of its general fund offerings to teacher compensation.
Northside Christian School seeks to provide a well-balanced offering of academic and extracurricular instruction. Texts from A Beka Book Publications and Bob Jones University Press form the core of the various subject-area curricula, with some secular publications utilized where appropriate. Academic excellence is emphasized in the elementary grades, and a college preparatory course of study is offered in the secondary. Speech, drama, debate, art, computer science, chemistry, physics, anatomyphysiology, pre-calculus, trigonometry, and calculus are available. Honors instruction is available in all the academic disciplines.
A full complement of fine arts instruction enhances the academic program. Music classes in the elementary, private piano, vocal, and instrumental lessons, elementary band and choir, junior high band and choir, senior high band and choir, and combined church-school events render a truly outstanding music program. The school presents a full-length play each spring, and Northsiders have excelled in forensics competition, notably in Public Forum and other speech events.
Intramural and interscholastic athletic competition are given their full and proper attention. Physical education is taught in the elementary through eighth grade. Fall sports include junior varsity and varsity volleyball and soccer; winter competition involves junior varsity and varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball. Our cheerleaders have won several state championships.
Northside Christian School is accredited by the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools, and its teachers are certified by SCACS or some other recognized certifying agency. The Educational Administrator is Mr. Brian Washburn and the School Ancillary is Dr. Cecil Beach.
