Salvation / Call to the Ministry: Dave Shaleen was saved at the age of 14 and was called to the ministry through the teen years and then the call was refined in the collegiate years with a focus on studying to be a church musician.
Unique: He grew up in Northern Minnesota where deer hunting and snowmobiling were constant activities in his life. Dave likes popcorn, cheese, and Mt. Dew for a Sunday after church snack.

Jodi Shaleen was born in Decatur, IL but spent most of her early years in Burlington,WI. After graduating from a Christian High School, she went to Maranatha Baptist University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music with piano as her proficiency and organ as her minor.
Jodi was raised in a Christian home and became saved at the age of 11. She desired to serve the Lord wherever He called, but really wanted to be a piano teacher since her first year of lessons at the age of 9. She enjoys teaching private lessons, leading the elementary choir, and directing the handbells at NCS!
Jodi is married to Dr. Dave Shaleen, the music director at NBC, and she has three girls who are Kali (20), Emily (18) and Lindsay (16).

Mr. Gavin Lockaby is a native of Greenville, SC. He has earned a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Political Science from Pensacola Christian College with a minor in education. Following his bachelor’s degree, Mr. Lockaby earned a master’s degree (M.S.) in educational leadership. Most recently he served as Assistant Director of Distance Learning at Pensacola Christian College.
Mr. Lockaby was born into a great Christian home. At the age of 12, upon realizing his lost condition and need of a Savior, he accepted Christ’s free gift of salvation. Upon entering college Mr. Lockaby knew that he felt a call to teach and serve in Christian ministry. Because of this, he attended a Christian college to prepare himself for a Christian education ministry.
Gavin is currently single….until December when he will be marrying Miss Abby Phillips!!!

Kathy Lago grew up in Geneva, a small town in Northeastern Ohio. Her previous library experience began with her working in her high school library. She then moved on to the public library in her town working first as a page and then as the assistant to the librarian. Her husband served 22 years in the United States Navy most of those years in Charleston. While raising her three children she took classes at Trident Technical College. She was led to the Lord by her mother when she was 12 years old and many years later was thrilled when God directed her family’s path back to Charleston just when Northside Christian School had a need for someone with the skills to set up the library. Kathy has seven grandchildren. She loves to read and loves introducing students to book characters that they will enjoy.

Pat Galloway attended elementary and high school in Ocean City, N.J., graduating from N.J. State College with a B.A. in elementary education. Upon giving her life to Christ, she taught in a mission school in Suriname, S.A. Years later she taught in the West Indies while her husband worked there. Then she taught predominately preschool at Santa Rosa Christian in Milton, Florida for 21 years. She retired there and eventually moved to Charleston to live with her Air Force son's family. For five years she has enjoyed teaching K-3 at NCS.
Mrs. Karrie Malmanger is one of our K4 teachers this year. She grew up in Wisconsin and then attended Pillsbury Baptist Bible College in Minnesota, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Bible and Elementary Education. She then went on to teach in both Wisconsin (Union Grove-First Grade, Volleyball/Basketball coach) and Minnesota (Brainerd-K4, K5, Jr/Sr. High, coaching) before the Lord led her and her husband, Mark, to Charleston, SC. Mrs. Malmanger has been teaching at NCS since 2005. During that time she has taught K4, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades.
The Malmangers have a son, Evan, who was born in March of 2013, a daughter, Elise, who was born in July of 2016, and two dogs, Dexter and Arabella. Mrs. Malmanger is a Packer and Notre Dame football fan as well as a MN Twins baseball fan. In her spare time she likes to sew and work on gutting and renovating her home.
Mrs. Malmanger accepted Christ as her Savior when she was 4 years old. Her favorite Bible characters are Esther and Ruth.
Candi Brittain teaches in lower elementary. She is a graduate of University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with a minor in science. She spent three years teaching in Sydney, Australia and three years as an army officer. She is married and her husband is retired from the air force. They have two daughters that live in the area and graduated from NCS. Five of her six grandchildren are now attending Northside. This is Mrs. Brittain's 22nd year teaching at Northside Christian School.
Deanna Simensen has been teaching K3 and K5 at Northside for 16 years. Prior to living here, she was teaching K5 in Puerto Rico where her parents were missionaries. She grew up in a military home and spent some of her childhood In Japan. Besides her love of teaching, she spends much of her time with her dogs Sadie and Ty.
Kim has taught at Northside for 30 years. She graduated from Appalachian Bible College in West Virginia.
She was saved at the age of 9 during Vacation Bible School. She has two sons, Lance and Logan, a daughter-in-law Rebecca, and one granddaughter, Colbie. She loves to shop and find great bargains, but her favorite pastime is spending time with her granddaughter.
Her life verse is Psalm 19:14 which says, "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.
Elizabeth had been teaching Second Grade at Northside Christian School for 20 years. She graduated from Clarion University with a dual major in Special Education and Elementary Education. She taught Special Education for several years in West Virginia. Her family moved here from Pittsburgh, PA 21 years ago and she started teaching at Northside the next year.
Her husband Marvin works for Wal Mart. Their three children are all graduates of Northside Christian School. She realized her need for salvation at a Christian camp.
In her spare time, Elizabeth enjoys free time activities such as crafting, sewing and recording family genealogy.
A Bible verse that has greatly impacted her life is Galatians 2:20 - I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith of the Son of God who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Mrs. Rachel Thomas has been teaching at NCS for 30 years. She graduated from BJU in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and a minor in English. Her parents were missionaries to Argentina where she was born. She grew up on James Island, SC where she attended school. As an 8 year old, she received Christ as her Savior. At 12 she dedicated her life to full time Christian service. In 1983, she married Tommy Thomas, then, a captain in the City of Charleston Fire Department. They live in James Island near where they were both raised. Her husband, Tommy, a retired Battalion Chief, works with her as Custodial coordinator and building maintenance. They have one son, Jake, and one granddaughter, Cecilia Sunshine..
Cindy Lynch is from Charleston, SC. She received a B.S. from Bob Jones University and a Masters of Education from the Citadel. She was saved at 6 years old during a church service and has always had a strong desire to teach. In college the Lord led Cindy to teach in a Christian school.
She is married to Richard Lynch, who is a retired civil engineer. She has two adult children (Jennifer Hirschler and Jonathan Lynch) and a grandson (Luke Hirschler). Her hobbies include cooking, gardening, and playing with her grandson.
Mrs. Minahan has been teaching at Northside for 18 years.
She earned her BS degree in interdisciplinary studies focusing in education and psychology from Liberty University. She is currently working toward her Masters degree in Education.
Cheri Minahan grew up in Charleston as a pastor’s daughter and committed her life to Jesus Christ at the age of fifteen. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and Junior church throughout her teen years and believed that God had gifted her in that area, so she pursued this call to education throughout her adult life.
Mrs. Minahan was married to the late Matthew Minahan, a dedicated servant of God and country.
Together they have four children and six grandchildren scattered around the country in various avenues of work and ministry.
Mrs. Minahan has a passion for education that emphasizes a Christian worldview and loves to read, play the piano and sing. She especially desires to never stop learning and strives to instill the same passion in her students.
Cora has been teaching for 14 years. For the last two years, she has taught in the elementary at NCS. She has her BS in Sociology from St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas.
Cora is married and has three grown children. When she is not teaching, she enjoys helping her husband, who is the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Charleston Southern University. She also has assisted the Northside Varsity Volleyball team with her deep knowledge of athletics.
Cora's life verse is Colossians 3:23 - And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.

Vayle Carruthers hails from Nova Scotia, Canada. He was saved at five years of age and is thankful to have grown up in a christian family. He attended BJU where he met his wife Donna and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Music. Vayle and Donna were married a few weeks after they graduated from college and moved to Charleston two weeks later where they started teaching at Northside in August of 1987.
Over the next few years Vayle attended Trident Tech where he took several computer networking and applications courses. He teaches computer, piano, Word Processing, Microsoft Office Applications, and is in charge of maintaining the computers and network at Northside.
Vayle is starting his 31th year at Northside and enjoys teaching students from grades 1 – 12. He enjoys reading, crafts and woodworking in his free time.

Mrs. Terri Richards grew up in Lewes, Delaware. She was saved when she was five years old in her Sunday School class. She knew she wanted to be a teacher in the 8th grade. She was influenced by her 7th grade Home Economics teacher. She felt the Lord was calling her to teach Home Economics in a Christian school. She attended Bob Jones University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education with a minor in science. She taught various home economics classes for seven years at Landmark Christian Academy in Easley, SC. She came to Charleston in 1989 and started teaching at Northside in 1992. She teaches junior high math and science and is the adviser for the yearbook. Mrs. Richards is married to Jim Richards who is retired from the Air Force and presently works for Boeing. She has two daughters and a son, two sons-in-law, two grandchildren and two peek-a-poos named Winston and Sophie. She enjoys photography and designing layouts for the yearbook, sewing, walking in her neighborhood, and browsing antique stores.

Greg has been teaching at Northside Christian School for 6 years. He teaches Bible, Social Studies, and coaches the girls volleyball team. He has been married to his wife Laurie since 1989. They have three children: Abbie (19), Andrew (17), and Samuel (13). The other member of the family is their dog Aspen. Greg graduated in 1989 from Bob Jones University with a Bachelors of Arts. He majored in Bible Education and minored in history. In 1992 he graduated from Bob Jones University with a Masters of Education. Greg also is a licensed tour guide from the city of Charleston. He enjoys sports and spending time with his family.

Laurie Rysta was born and raised in farming country in Leroy, Ohio. God graciously allowed her to grow up in a Christian home as the eldest of seven children. (She used to bribe her siblings to "play school" with her by giving them her desserts.) She was saved as a five-year-old after an evening service at Bible Community Church in Mentor, Ohio.
She attended Mentor Christian School from K-5 - 12th grade and graduated as salutatorian in 1984. Laurie knew that God wanted her to become a teacher when she was in K-5. In 1988, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a minor in English at Bob Jones University, Greenville, South Carolina.
Laurie has taught all grades/subjects K-3 through 6th grades, 7th and 8th grade math and English, geometry, and 9th - 12th grade English Language Arts, and served as yearbook staff member, editor, and also an adviser for a total of eleven years.
In 1989, she married Greg Rysta and currently lives in Goose Creek. Laurie has taught all three of her children, Abbie, Andrew, and Samuel. She enjoys baking, cooking, decorating cakes, teaching, tutoring, and word games.

Dan is from Bridgewater, Virginia. Dan trusted Christ at the age of twelve at People Baptist Church in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He received a Bachelors of Arts in Bible from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina. While finishing his degree, Dan called into the ministry while serving as the youth pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Lancaster, South Carolina.
Dan has been married to Angie Walden since 1985. They have three children. Nathan (son) and Kristina (daughter-in-law), Erica and McKinley Brown (Son-in-Law), and Todd and Rachel (daughter-in-law). Dan and Angie have two grandchildren, Elijah and Rylee.
He enjoys serving in the youth group at Northside Baptist Church and spending time with his family.

Julie Washburn grew up in Denver, Colorado where she graduated from a Christian school. During high school she felt the Lord calling her to work with teenagers, but did not realize until after college graduation that God was directing her specifically to teaching. She has an undergraduate degree in Bible/Youth Ministries, with minors in English and Speech from Bob Jones University. In 2016 she completed her Master's Degree in Secondary Education at Crown College. Brian and she will have been married for thirty-five years in December of 2017. They have two married children, Jennifer (Jimmy) Guenther and Jonathan (Anna), five grandsons, and a granddaughter to arrive in January of 2018. A former cheerleader, Julie can still do the splits - but would need someone else to help her get back up!
